Six drowned in the Patna boat tragedy
Patna June 16: In a tragic incident, six persons of a family were drowned after a boat capsized in Patna’s outskirt Barh sub-division on Sunday.
The victims belong to Malti village in Nalanda district. The officials said that there were 17 persons boarded the boat and 11 of them were rescued by the local boat sailors.
Subham Kumar, SDO of Barh Renge said: “As many as 17 persons of a family boarded on the boat which capsized mid-way in Ganga River. They Malti village in Nalanda district and come here at Umanath Ghat to take a holy bath in the Ganga River. The local boat sailors managed to rescue 11 of them but 6 persons are still missing.
The district administration has informed NDRF and SDRF about the incident and the rescue operation is underway to fish out the missing persons.
On the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, a large number of devotees had come from far-flung areas to take holy baths in the Ganga river.
The eyewitnesses have said that many devotees went to the other side of the Ganga river using boats to take a holy bath. The victims did the same practice and boarded a boat which capsized mid-way in the river.
The local residents claimed the boat sailors allowed a maximum number of passengers in their boat. The same has happened today. The boat was overcrowded and hence it lost balance and capsized midway.
