Patna, May 14, 2026: The Grand Alliance candidate Sonu Kumar Rai emerged victorious in the by-election for the Bhojpur-Buxar seat of the Bihar Legislative Council, defeating NDA nominee Kanhaiya Prasad in a closely fought contest.
The election, held in Ara, witnessed an exceptionally high voter turnout of 97.96 percent, reflecting strong participation from the electorate.
Following the announcement of the results, celebration erupted among supporters, with sweets distributed across party offices.
The by-poll was necessitated after Radhacharan Seth vacated the Legislative Council seat upon being elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
The JD(U) had fielded Radhacharan Seth’s son Kanhaiya Prasad in the contest.
Sonu Kumar Rai promises development in the region:
Expressing gratitude to voters and supporters, Sonu Kumar Rai pledged to focus on the development of the Bhojpur-Buxar region and work towards addressing local issues.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) termed the victory a reflection of public trust in the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav.
Party spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed said the win of Sonu Kumar Rai has strengthened confidence among party workers and supporters.
He added that the result reinforces faith in Tejashwi Yadav’s leadership and commitment to public issues.
Leaders highlighted the democratic mandate:
RJD State President Mangni Lal Mandal described the outcome as a victory of democratic values and the trust reposed by elected representatives.
RJD state spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav emphasized that elections conducted through ballot papers strengthen democracy.
He asserted that public support ultimately determines electoral outcomes, despite any alleged attempts to influence the process.
RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan stated that this victory is a triumph of the trust and faith that the common people repose in the party’s National Executive President, Tejashwi Yadav.
Since Tejashwi Yadav assumed the role of RJD’s National Executive President, the party has been achieving tremendous success in the elections held thereafter. Recently, in the Kerala Assembly elections, the RJD secured a victory in one seat, while narrowly losing two other seats by a very small margin of votes.
The party’s success in this first by-election held since the Bihar Assembly elections has significantly boosted the morale of RJD workers. An atmosphere of jubilation prevails within the RJD family.
