Patna, September 28, 2024: The water level of the Kosi River is rising dangerously, posing a significant flood threat to the residents of the Kosi division, particularly in Supaul district.

The surge in water is primarily due to heavy water flow from Nepal. Although the situation is concerning, Supal District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar reassured the public that the water has not yet overtopped the Kosi barrage.

“Water has not completely overtopped the Kosi Barrage. What we are witnessing is water passing through the bridge’s railing, giving the appearance of flooding over the road,” Kumar said.

He further said the situation is under control.

To safeguard the Kosi Barrage and prevent potential disaster, Kumar requested the Nepal government to halt all traffic on the barrage. Responding promptly, the Nepalese government imposed a three-day ban on vehicular movement across the barrage. Barriers have been installed on both sides, and Nepal Police are stationed to enforce the order.

DM Kumar emphasized that this measure is purely precautionary and reassured the public that there has been no damage to the structure of the barrage.

Our engineers are working around the clock to maintain the integrity of the barrage, and we are hopeful that the water level will soon begin to recede,” he said.

The Indian and Nepalese authorities are working together to monitor the situation. The Indian Water Resource Department officials are receiving constant updates, while a team of engineers regularly inspecting the barrage.

Kosi barrage is a crucial link on Nepal’s national highway, and its closure has disrupted travel between key locations such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lahan, one of Nepal’s major eye hospitals. However, travellers can reach these places by air.

So far, about six lakh cusecs of water have been released from the Kosi barrage, with Nepal releasing an additional 4.8 lakh cusecs of water from Barah area, increasing the pressure on the river.

As water levels continue to rise, the administration is urging residents in low-lying areas to relocate to higher grounds. Local authorities are using loudspeakers to alert and guide the public, warning of a possible catastrophe if water levels continue to increase overnight.
