The flood situation worsened in the North Bihar.

Patna, September 29, 2024: The flood situation in North Bihar, particularly in the Kosi region, has intensified following the release of massive amounts of water from Kosi Barrage at Virpur and Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage in Bagaha in the last 24 hours.

On Sunday at 5 a.m., the authorities released 6,61,295 cusecs of water from Kosi Barrage, marking the highest single release since 1968.

Earlier on Saturday at 7 p.m., 5.79 lakh cusecs of water were released from Kosi Barrage and 5.38 lakh cusecs of water from the Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage.

This has exacerbated the flood situation across 13 districts in North Bihar, impacting areas along the Kosi and Gandak Rivers.

The state’s water resource minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has instructed the officials to remain vigilant, closely monitoring the embankments and ensuring safety in the affected regions.

The people living in the vulnerable areas have been advised to move to higher grounds as the floodwater continues to rise.

The department has taken proactive measures to manage the escalating flood situation by setting up a dedicated war room in Patna. This war room is tasked with overseeing flood control, irrigation management, and rain predictions, working in close coordination with the meteorological department for real-time rain forecasts. The war room operates 24/7 with officials working in three shifts to ensure continuous monitoring and quick response.

Additionally, 45 junior engineers, 25 assistant engineers, 17 executive engineers, and 3 superintending engineers deployed at sensitive and very sensitive places. Their role is to vigilantly monitor the conditions of the embankments to prevent breaches and mitigate the impact of flooding.

An advisory letter was issued from the office of Santosh Kumar Mall, principal secretary of water resource department on Saturday evening where the district administrations of West Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, East Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Sheohar, Samastipur, Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea, Katihar, Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Khagaria, and Bhagalpur to ensure precautionary measures and use loudspeakers to alert people about the expected flood.     

These efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to manage the flood threat and protect the affected districts in North Bihar.
