Patna, August 4, 2026: Student protesters once again intensified in Bihar’s capital on Tuesday as students affiliated with various Left-wing organizations took to the streets with a five-point charter of demands.
Led by the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Morcha, the protesters attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s residence to stage a demonstration.
Patna police made arrangements to deal with student protests:
Anticipating the protest, the Patna Police had made elaborate security arrangements across the city, deploying personnel at several key intersections and sensitive locations.
The procession began at Ramghulam Chowk, from where the students started marching towards the Chief Minister’s residence.
Police personnel attempted to stop the protesters near Gate No. 12 of Gandhi Maidan.
However, the students continued their march and moved towards Dakbungalow.
Police subsequently intercepted them near Dakbungalow Chowk, where minor scuffles reportedly broke out between protesters and security personnel.
Large numbers of police personnel had already been deployed at JP Golambar and Income Tax intersection.
A water cannon was also stationed in the area as a precautionary measure.
The police repeatedly attempted to prevent the protesters from proceeding towards the Chief Minister’s residence and continued monitoring the situation closely after stopping the procession near Dakbungalow.
Students raise five-point charter of demands:
The protesters carried banners and posters highlighting their demands.
One of their principal demands was the filling of vacant teaching positions in universities across Bihar.
The protesters also opposed the proposal to repeal the University Act of 1976, arguing that the interests of students and teachers should be taken into consideration before making major changes to the state’s higher-education framework.
Another major issue raised by the protesters was alleged police excesses during recent student agitation in different parts of Bihar.
A female protester alleged that police had used excessive force against protesters and referred to the alleged firing of AK-47s in Siwan.
She also raised allegations concerning the use of tear gas and force during protests in Jehanabad.
The protesters demanded an inquiry into the conduct of police officers accused of using excessive force and called for action against those found responsible, irrespective of their rank, including SPs and DSPs,
The protesters also demanded compensation for people who were allegedly affected during police action against student protesters.
They claimed that several individuals associated with the agitation were facing harassment at different locations and demanded that the government ensure their protection.
The students said that any police officer found guilty following an impartial investigation should face appropriate action.
Opposition to commercialization of education:
The protesters also raised concerns over what they described as the increasing commercialization of Bihar’s education system.
They demanded concrete measures to ensure that protesters from ordinary and economically weaker backgrounds can continue to access quality education without facing excessive financial burdens.
Throughout the demonstration, students raised slogans against the government and reiterated their five-point charter of demands.
