Sonpur division launches major litchi transport plan from Bihar, targets 22,100 tons shipment.

Patna, May 8, 2025: In a significant boost to Bihar’s agricultural exports, the Sonpur division of Indian Railways has rolled out an expanded and specialized plan to transport the state’s world-renowned Shahi Litchi from Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, and surrounding regions to metropolitan markets across India.

The initiative is being led by the Sonpur Division and aims to triple last year’s shipment volume.

Previously dependent solely on the Pawan Express (Train No. 11062), this year’s campaign now includes six additional Mail and express trains equipped with dedicated 24-ton parcel vans for litchi transport.

These trains will facilitate rapid and fresh delivery to key destinations like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Pune.

Train-wise weekly litchi transport capacity from Sonpur division:

Train No 15267 Raxaul Lok Manya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Saturday-96 tons/month, Train No. 22553 Raxaul-LTT Antyodaya SF Express Monday-96 tons/month, Train No. 05557 Raxaul-LTT-Tuesday-96 tons/month, Train No.05585 Raxaul-LTT-Fridays-96 tons/month, Train No. 01044 Samastipur-LTT-Wednesday-96 tons/month and train No. 05289 Muaaffarpur-Pune-Monday-96 tons/month.

The Pawan Express will continue its daily service, moving 24 tons per day totalling 744 tons over 31 days.

Total projected volume: 2, 100 tons.

Compared to last year’s modest volume of 689 tons, this year’s modest volume of 689 tons, this year’s plan aims to more than triple the quantity, targeting 2, 100 tons of litchis.

The inclusion of cities like Delhi and Ahmedabad significantly broadens the reach and ensures more farmers benefit from high-demand urban markets.

Enhanced infrastructure and farmer support in Sonpur division:

To support the initiative, a dedicated “Lichchhavi Parcel Office” has been established in Muzaffarpur.

Sun-protection sheds and fruit shelters have been constructed to prevent spoilage. Drinking water, packing space, and loading zones have been provided.

UPI-enabled payment systems, special parcel permits, and discounted scanning charges are in place to streamline logistics.

This move is expected to significantly benefit litchi farmers and traders by ensuring timely delivery, improved fruit quality, and boosting agricultural revenue for Bihar.
