Muzaffarpur’s Shahi Litchi sees soaring demand; Indian Railways gears up for hassle-free transport.

Patna, May 5, 2025: As the demand for Muzarffarpur’s world-famous Shahi Litchi surges both in domestic and international markets, Indian Railways has stepped in to ensure smooth and efficient transportation of the fruit, particularly aiding farmers and exporters in Bihar.

To facilitate seamless logistics, the Sonpur Division of Indian Railways has announced the inclusion of high-capacity parcel bogies in trains, specifically to support the supply chain.

This initiative aims to directly connect litchi farmers to key markets across the country and bolster their income.

Indu Rani Dubey, Principal Chief Commercial Manager (CCM) of East Central Railway, Hajipur, while addressing the media, said: “We are committed to assisting farmers. They’ve shared suggestions, and we are working to implement them so that their produce reaches markets efficiently and in prime condition.”

Global demand for litchi spikes, UAE leads the surge:

Favourable weather, especially high temperature and humidity, has led to excellent fruit production in Muzaffarpur, particularly in urban farms like Gosala Idgah Bagan, where the fruit matures earlier than in rural areas.

Export demand is booming notably, orders from the UAE have more than doubled compared to last year.

Litchi exports are scheduled to begin on May 22, with the Litchi Utpadak Sangh actively preparing for the international shipment.

Bihar contributes 40% to national production:

Bihar plays a significant role in India’s litchi industry, accounting for 40% of the national output.

The state produces six major varieties, with Shahi litchi of Muzaffarpur enjoying Geographical indication (GI) tag status and the highest popularity.

Other varieties cultivated in Bihar include China, Bedana, Longia, Kasba and Purvi.

This year, the iconic red hue of ripe litchi is expected to emerge between May 15 to 20, signalling the beginning of the peak harvest season.

With proactive support from the Railways and a growing international appetite for the fruit, 2025 is shaping up to be a promising year for farmers in Bihar.
