“The weakness of North Bihar is flood water and hence Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to address this issue. He may come to Darbhanga to lay the foundation stone for AIIMS on November 13. Preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit are currently underway to ensure a smooth event,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
The Bihar government has already allocated 150.13 acres of land for the project:
The Nitish Kumar government allocated 150.13 acres of land at the Ekmi-Shobhan bypass for the AIIMS construction in August this year and completed all requirements set by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Additional infrastructure support is being set up, including a 20 MVA electricity connection from two independent sources, four-lane road access, and a potable water supply of 1.5 million liters per day (MLD) to meet the institute’s needs.
These provisions are essential to accommodate the medical facility’s operational requirements.
The Health Ministry approved the project on July 25 this year.
The Deputy Chief Minister said such initiative represents part of a broader development push led by the central government in Bihar, with other projects in regions like Jamui, Lakhisarai, Nawada, Begusarai, Banka, Bhagalpur, and Munger.
The new AIIMS in Darbhanga will be the second in the state, following the one in Patna, and is expected to enhance medical services for North Bihar’s population.
The central government has approved the project:
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently confirmed that the Ekmi-Sobhan Bypass site in Darbhanga is suitable for constructing a new AIIMS, following a technical team’s assessment in March.
The project responds to a strong demand for advanced healthcare facilities in North Bihar, which has long struggled with limited access to specialized medical care.
This new facility aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the northern region and alleviate some of the pressure on AIIMS Patna.
