Patna, August 26, 2026: The flood threat along the Gandak River has intensified after a sudden rise in water levels was reported in Nepal’s Furke Khola area of the Trishuli River, near the Nepal-Tibet border.
The development has raised concerns about possible Clacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) activity and its downstream impact on Bihar.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued a special flood advisory for Bihar on August 26, warning that the flood wave moving downstream through the Trishuli River could eventually enter the Gandak system.
Although the intensity of the wave is expected to reduce as it travels downstream, authorities in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been advised to maintain special vigilance along the Gandak River.

The Bihar Water Resources Department has placed its machinery on high alert.
All 36 gates of the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage have been opened to regulate the incoming water flow.
Water Resource Department Secretary Dr. Chandrashekher Singh reviewed the situation at the Central Flood Control Room and directed officials to maintain continuous monitoring.
A technical team headed by a Superintending Engineer has also been sent to the barrage to assess the situation.
Waring alert have been issued to districts situated within the Gandak basin.
Officials have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the river and water levels, conduct continuous inspections of embankments and vulnerable locations, keep emergency materials and equipment readily available, closely monitor dams, and low-lying areas.
Amit Shah speaks to CM Samrat Choudhary after threat in Bihar:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the phone to review the situation following heavy rainfall and the flood in Nepal.
Shah sought information about Bihar’s preparedness and assured the Chief Minister that the Central government would extend all possible assistance to the state if the situation worsens.
The Bihar administration is already monitoring water levels in the Gandak and other rivers originating in Nepal, along with the condition of embankments.
Authorities have placed particular emphasis on West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali districts to monitor the flood situation.
