Patna, September 29, 2025: Patna is set to witness a new era of river transport with the water metro on the Ganga River.
On Monday, a successful trial was conducted between Gaighat and NIT Ghat using the electric vessel MV Gomdhar Konwar brought from Kolkata. The trial was attended by IWAI Director Arvind Kumar, Transport Development Corporation MD Nand Kishore, technical experts Sanjay Verma and Karunesh Kumar, Nodal Officer Suman Yadav, and other officials.
The official confirmed that after this successful trial, the Water Metro Service will soon be extended between Digha and Kangan Ghats.
The agreement for the water metro was recently held:
The project is part of a recent agreement between the Bihar government and the Island Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
The electric vessel used in the trial features a glass-enclosed air-conditioned cabin having a seating capacity of 50 passengers with additional space for 25 standing passengers.

The Water Metro aims to serve both daily commuters and domestic and international tourists, offering a convenient alternative to road travel.
A floating jetty will also be constructed along the Ganga River to facilitate smooth boarding and disembarking.
Patna’s water metro expansion soon:
Officials indicated that the fare structure will be announced soon, and plans are underway to bring another electric vessel, MV Nishadraj, from Kolkata to expand the service.

That electric vessel will have a capacity of 100 passengers, and it is expected to arrive in the next two months.
This initiative is expected to significantly improve connectivity in Patna while promoting sustainable river transport along the Ganga River.
