Patna, July 17, 2025: Ahead of the Bihar Assembly Election 2025, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced 125 units of free electricity per month for every household in the state starting August 1, 2025 (applicable from the July bill).
In a social media post, Nitish Kumar stated, “We have been providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates since the beginning. Now, from August 1, all domestic consumers will not have to pay for electricity up to 125 units. This will benefit 1.67 crore families in Bihar.”
Nitish Kumar emphasized solar power:
He further announced that within the next three years, the government will install solar power plants on the rooftops or nearby public spaces with the consent of domestic consumers.
Under the Kutir Jyoti Yojna, extremely poor families will receive solar installations at no cost, while others will receive financial support.
The initiative aims to generate an estimated 10,000 megawatts of solar energy in the state over the next three years.
JDU MLC describes it as a master stroke of Nitish Kumar:
JDU MLC Neeraj Kumar hailed this move as a “master stroke” by Nitish Kumar ahead of the elections.
He said, “CM Nitish Kumar cares for every caste and religion, and hence has given 125 units free to all citizens of the caste. We purchase costly electricity, but cannot only announce; we implement welfare initiatives.”
He further remarked that Nitish Kumar, who once removed lanterns from the homes of the poor and backward classes, has now decided to remove the burden of electricity costs.
“This will be a screenplay of social transformation, ensuring the new generation can study smoothly. This will give a 33,000-vote current to those who want to keep lanterns burning in Bihar’s homes.”
This announcement comes as a counter to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s promise of 200 units of free electricity per household if elected in 2025.
