Patna, June 12, 2024: Amid severe heatwave conditions and high humidity across Bihar, Patna District Magistrate S. Kapil Ashok has ordered the closure of all schools and coaching institutions in the district for the next three days—from June 13 to June 15.
The schools will remain closed due to the heatwave:
The District Magistrate said the situation would be reviewed on June 15, and further decisions would be taken accordingly.
“In light of the weather department’s forecast, there is a possibility of schools students falling ill due to the heatwave. Therefore, all schools and coaching centres will remain closed from June 13 to June 15,” said DM S. Kapil Ashok.
He added that coaching institutes may continue classes through online platforms during this period.
For the past few days, maximum temperatures in Patna have hovered between 43 degrees Celsius and 46 degrees Celsius, while high humidity has made the felt temperature nearly 10 degrees Celsius higher. The Meteorological Centre, Patna, has issued a red alert for north-west, south-west, and south-central Bihar, and a yellow alert for other districts.
The temperature and humidity levels are high:
“The temperature and humidity levels are dangerously high. People must strictly follow the Disaster Management Department’s advisories for protection from heat,” said Anand Shankar, Meteorologist at the Patna Meteorological Centre.
Meanwhile, heat-related illnesses have surged in the state, with around 400 patients suffering from heat stroke, diarrhea, stomachache, and headaches being admitted to the Masaurhi sub-divisional hospital in Patna district on Wednesday, while several others sought treatment in nearby government and private hospitals.
“Most patients are suffering from heat stroke. We have advised them to avoid exposure to direct sunlight and to consume plenty of fluids. A dedicated heatwave ward has been set up in our hospital,” said Dr. Sanjita Rani, in-charge of the Masaurhi sub-divisional hospital.
Taking note of the situation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed all District Magistrates and Civil Surgeons to ensure adequate stock of medicines in hospitals and instructed power distribution companies to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.
