Patna, July 5, 2026: The Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar has become a high-profile political contest with Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor announcing his entry into electoral politics.

The prominent electoral strategist will contest the first Assembly election of his political career from the prestigious Bankipur constituency.

His candidature was approved during a meeting of the party’s core committee on Sunday, following which Jan Suraaj leaders formally announced him as the party’s official candidate at a press conference.

The announcement ends days of speculation over whether Prashant Kishor would personally enter the electoral fray.

Prashant Kishor and his party treat the contest as a major political test:

Jan Suraaj Party has projected the Bankipur by-election as more than a contest for a single Assembly seat, describing it as a test of the party’s organizational strength and its vision of alternative politics in Bihar.

Political observers believe the election is likely to draw statewide attention, with Prashant Kishor’s candidature shifting the focus beyond local issues to broader questions about Bihar’s political future, Jan Suraaj’s grassroots support, and the evolving opposition landscape.

The Bankipur Assembly constituency has traditionally been regarded as a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) stronghold.

The seat was represented by senior BJP leader and national president Nitin Nabin, who resigned after being elected to the Rajya Sabha, leading to the by-election.

With Prashant Kishor entering the contest, the election is expected to become one of the most closely watched political battles in the state.

Former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav has fielded Veena Manvi as his party’s candidate for the seat.

There has also been political speculation that the Grand Alliance may extend support to Prashant Kishor. However, no formal announcement confirming such support has been made.

The BJP is expected to focus on retaining its traditional support base in Bankipur, while Jan Suraaj will seek to use the by-election to demonstrate its organizational strength ahead of future electoral contests.

Polling on July 30:

Voting for the Bankipur Assembly by-election is scheduled to take place on July 30, while the counting of votes will be held on August 3.

With Prashant Kishor making his electoral debut, the contest is expected to attract significant political attention and is likely to be viewed as an important indicator of emerging political equations in Bihar.
