Patna, May 25, 2026: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday welcomed the decision of the Central Board of Secondary Education to include Maithili in the academic curriculum, describing it as a “historic” step toward preserving Mithila’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting Indian languages and traditions through the education system.
Samrat Choudhary claimed such a move would strengthen the identity of Mithilanchal:
In a social media post, Samrat Choudhary said the inclusion of Maithili as a mother tongue subject from Class 1 up to the secondary level would strengthen the cultural identity of the Mithila region and help future generations remain connected to their language, traditions, and roots.
“The recognition of Maithili as a ‘Mother Tongue’ subject within the CBSE curriculum is a matter of immense pride for Maithili’s identity and linguistic heritage,” Samrat Choudhary stated.
The development follows a letter issued on May 19 from the office of Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary to BJP MP Gopal Ji Thakur.

The Darbhanga MP had earlier written to the Union Education Ministry seeking inclusion of Maithili in the CBSE curriculum.
In his response, Jayant Chaudhary said the matter had been examined by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT).
Referring to the National Education Policy 2020, he noted that students’ mother tongues are recommended as the medium of instruction up to Class 5, and wherever possible, up to Class 8.
Maithili is listed in the eights scheduled of the Indian Constitution:
He further highlighted that Maithili is among the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
NCERT has already developed introductory primers in 121 Indian languages, including Maithili, and is translating textbooks into all 22 scheduled languages.

According to the communication, CBSE has officially incorporated Maithili as a subject at the secondary level beginning from the academic session 2026-27, and the syllabus has been made available on the CBSE academic website.
Jayant Chaudhary added that the Ministry of Education remains committed to promoting and preserving Indian languages while safeguarding the broader educational interests of students across the country.
