New Delhi, March 10, 2026: The Ministry of Cooperation has introduced Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, aimed at empowering drivers and promoting inclusive mobility solutions across the country.
The Initiative is part of the government’s broader vision of “Sahkar se Samriddhi,” which seeks to strengthen cooperatives as instruments of employment generation, social security and grassroots economic participation.
Bharat Taxi has a cooperative model with drivers at the centre:
Unlike traditional aggregator platforms, Bharat Taxi is designed to place drivers—referred to as “Sarathis”—at the centre of ownership, governance and value creation.
The platform operates on a zero-commission model, ensuring that profits are distributed directly among the driver-members.
The cooperative was registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 and established on June 6, 2025, by eight national-level cooperative institutions.

It was officially launched on February 5, 2026. At present, Bharat Taxi services are operational in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and in Gujarat cities including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Dwarka and Somnath.
The platform plans to expand across India in a phased manner over the next two years.
Bharat Taxi has signed MoUs with several major institutions and organizations, including Paytm, Airport Authority of India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Delhi Traffic Police, National e-Governance Division, Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation, IFFCO Tokio General Insurance, GMR Group, and State Bank of India.
These collaborations aim to support digital payments, airport and metro connectivity, traffic coordination, tourism services, insurance coverage and financial assistance, helping build a coordinated and citizen-friendly mobility ecosystem.
Employment and livelihood opportunities:
The initiatives are expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for Driver-owners, unemployed youth, and individuals seeking self-employment.
By strengthening local participation and cooperative ownership, the platforms aim to boost local economies and promote inclusive growth.
Bharat Taxi has also introduced programs to encourage greater participation of women, including Bike Didi and Sarthi Didi.

These initiatives focus on skill development, training, financial assistance, safety measures and preferential onboarding for women drivers.
The program will also collaborate with women’s self-help groups and cooperative institutions to increase participation.
This information was provided by Amit Shah, Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative sector and creating inclusive mobility solutions in India.
