Patna, March 5, 2026: Nitish Kumar is among the few leaders in Indian politics who have navigated decades of ideological shifts, shifting, alliances, and administrative experimentation while remaining at the centre of Bihar’s political landscape.

With his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, his long and eventful political journey appears set to enter a new phase.

Early political beginnings for Nitish Kumar:

Nitish Kumar’s political career began in student activism before he entered electoral politics.

He first contested the Harnaut assembly seat in 1977 but was unsuccessful.

His breakthrough came in 1985, when he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Harnaut, marking the beginning of his active legislative career.

In 1090, he entered the Lok Sabha for the first time from the Barh constituency.

He went on to represent Barh in 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999.

During his tenure at the Centre, he held key portfolios including Agriculture, Surface Transport, and Railways.

His stint as Railway Minister drew significant attention for administrative reforms and safety measures.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he was elected from Nalanda, further consolidating his position in national politics.

Nitish Kumar first took oath as Chief Minister of Bihar in 2000, though his government lasted only seven days.

A decisive political shift occurred in November 2005, when he was sworn in again as Chief Minister, marking the beginning of a prolonged phase in Bihar’s governance.

He subsequently served as Chief Minister in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025, navigating complex political realignments.

Over the years, he alternated between alliances with the NDA and the RJD-led formations, reflecting Bihar’s dynamic coalition politics.

During his tenure, he also served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, adding to his legislative experience.

Experience across legislative houses:

Nitish Kumar is regarded as one of the rare leaders to have been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Bihar Legislative Council, and the Lok Sabha. With his impending entry into the Rajya Sabha, he is set to complete representation in all major legislative bodies at the state and national levels.

From student politics to multiple terms as Chief Minister and now a likely transition to the Upper House of Parliament, Nitish Kumar’s career reflects the turbulence and transformation of Bihar’s political journey over the past four decades.

His move to the Rajya Sabha is being seen as both a culmination of an extensive public life and the beginning of a new chapter in his political trajectory.
