New Delhi, January 25, 2026: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced and addressed the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations in New Delhi today (January 25, 2026).
Addressing the gathering, President Droupadi Murmu said that the strength of India’s democracy lies not only in the sheer number of voters but also in the depth of its democratic spirit.
She noted that even the oldest voters, citizens living in remote areas, actively exercise their right to vote.
She appreciated the aware voters and all those associated with the election machinery, under the leadership of the Election Commission of India, for setting inspiring examples in the exercise of this democratic right.
President Droupadi Murmu advocated for electoral participation:
The President emphasized that public participation gives practical shape to democracy at the grassroots level. The Commission has undertaken numerous initiatives to ensure that “no voter is left behind,” including an extensive program to enhance voter awareness.

Referring to this year’s theme, “My India, My Vote: Indian Citizen at the heart of Indian Democracy,” she said it reflects the true spirit of Indian democracy and underscores the significance of the right to vote in the democratic system.
She further stated that voting is not merely a political expression, but a reflection of citizens’ faith in the democratic process.
It is also a means for citizens to articulate their aspirations. The right to vote, available to all adult citizens without discrimination, gives concrete expression to the constitutional ideals of political and social justice and equality. The principle of “One Person, One Vote,” enshrined in the Constitution, reflects the firm faith of Constitution-makers in the wisdom of the common people.
Indian voters, she said, have vindicated this faith, earning Indian democracy global respect as an extraordinary example.

While underscoring the importance of the right to vote, the President stressed that equality is important for all adult citizens to exercise their franchise with a sense of constitutional duty.
She expressed confidence that voters, free from temptation, ignorance, and misinformation, would continue to strengthen the electoral system through the power of their conscience.
President Droupadi Murmu encouraged young voters to participate in elections:
The President congratulated young voters across the country who have received the card grants them the invaluable right to actively participate in the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy.
She described today’s voters as the architects of India’s future and expressed confidence that young voters would exercise their rights responsibly and contribute to nation-building.

National Voters’ Day has been observed annually on January 25 since 2011 to commemorate the foundation day of the Election Commission of India. The occasion aims to underline the centrality of voters to raise electoral participation in the democratic process.
