Patna, May 22, 2026: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has expressed support for the idea of creating a cricket franchise from Bihar that could eventually represent the state in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to a social media post by London-based entrepreneur and Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agrawal, who urged the government to work toward giving Bihar its own Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Samrat Choudhary acknowledged the call for recognition of Bihar’s cricket talent:

In his post, Anil Agrawal highlighted the contribution of Bihar-born cricketers to Indian cricket and questioned why the state still lacks its own prominent cricketing identity.

He referred to players, including Ishan Kishan, who was born in Patna and became known for scoring one of the fastest ODI double centuries.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Samastipur, who emerged as one of the youngest IPL debutants and created a sensation in world cricket with his fearless batting performance.

Saqib Hussain, whose bowling performances have recently attracted attention.

Agrawal emphasized the need for world-class sports infrastructure and greater opportunities for Bihar’s youth to excel in cricket.

CM Samrat Choudhary says the government is working in mission mode:

Responding to the appeal, Samrat Choudhary stated that the Bihar government is already working in “mission mode” with a long-term vision for strengthening cricket infrastructure and promoting sporting talent in the state.

“I completely agree with you. For the cricket emotion of Bihar, the government is working in mission mode with a clear vision. With your cooperation, a positive decision will certainly be taken regarding the Bihar cricket team,” the Chief Minister said.

Bihar has historically participated in domestic cricket through its Bihar cricket team in the Ranji Trophy, though the state has struggled to emerge as a major force due to limited sporting infrastructure.

Several former cricketers from Bihar, including Syed Saba Karim and players such as Raju Walse, Sunil Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Tarun Kumar, and Vishnu Shankar, represented Bihar in domestic cricket during earlier decades.

The state government is now focusing on improving sports infrastructure, including the development of a large cricket stadium in Rajgir with a proposed seating capacity of around 40,000 spectators, along with the renovation of the historic Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna.

Officials believe these developments could help nurture emerging cricket talent from Bihar and strengthen the state’s presence in Indian cricket in the coming years.
