Patna, June 15, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, once again grabbed global attention after sharing a cheerful selfie on the side-lines of the G7 Outreach Summit in Apulia, Italy, on Friday.

The leaders were seen smiling as Melony clicked the picture, continuing a trend that has frequently sparked online buzz.

The friendly rapport between the two leaders, visible during their previous meetings at the G20 Summit in New Delhi last year and later at COP28 in Dubai, has inspired a wave of internet memes.

Their earlier selfie at COP28, shared by Meloni with the caption “Good friends at COP28, had gone viral on social media.

On the side-lines of the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Meloni, where both leaders reviewed the ongoing progress under the India—Italy Strategic Partnership.

The discussion focused heavily on strengthening defence and security ties.

According to an official statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two sides expressed hope for further expansion of defence industrial cooperation.

They also welcomed the upcoming visit of the Italian Navy’s aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci to India later this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also thanked the Italian government for acknowledging the Indian Army’s role in the Italian Campaign during World War 2.

He informed Meloni that India will upgrade the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial located in Mentone, Italy, which commemorates the contribution of Indian soldiers.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the steady growth in political and strategic engagement.

Focus on trade:

They also emphasized expanding trade and economic partnerships in areas such as clean energy, manufacturing, space, science and technology, telecom, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals, aiming to build resilient and future-ready supply chains.

In this context, they welcomed the recently signed MoU on Industrial Property Rights (IPR), which will facilitate cooperation in patents, trademarks, designs, and related domains.
