New Delhi, January 30, 2026: Ensuring the timely availability of fertilizer to farmers has remained a top priority for the Government of India.
In this direction, enhanced coordination between the Ministry of Railways and the Department of Fertilizers during the Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2025 has delivered tangible results on the ground.
The swift and seamless movement of compost rakes ensured an uninterrupted supply to states, preventing shortages during critical agricultural periods.
The Department of Fertilizers stated that the exceptional cooperation extended by the Ministry of Railways enabled the successful delivery of adequate quantities of fertilizers to even the remotest parts of the country.
This unprecedented level of inter-ministerial coordination has further strengthened the Government’s commitment to national food security.
The scale of this achievement is reflected in record rake movement during the Kharif season.
Record movement of fertilizer rakes:
IN July 2025, an average of 72 compost rakes were loaded daily, which increased to 78 rakes in August and further to 80 rakes per day in September—the highest loading levels recorded in the last five Kharif seasons.
During the financial year 2025-26 (April—December 2025), sufficient and satisfactory availability of major fertilizers was ensured across all states. Against a requirement of 312.40 lakh metric tonnes of urea, an availability of 350.45 lakh metric tonnes was recorded.

Similarly, against a requirement of 252.81 lakh metric tonnes of major P&K fertilizers (DAP, MOP and NPKs), 287.69 lakh metric tonnes were made available.
Historic high in compost transportation:
A significant rise was also observed in compost transportation. Between April and December 2025, a total of 530.16 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizers were supplied, crossing the 500 lakh metric tonne milestone for the first time.
This represents a 12.2 percent increase over the corresponding period of 2024-25 (472.58 lakh metric tonnes) and an 8.5 percent increase over the previous record achieved in 2023-24.
During this period, 10,841 rakes were operated for urea movement—about 8 percent higher than the previous year.
For P&K fertilizers, 8,806 rakes were operated, marking an increase of approximately 18 percent compared to 2024-25.

Month-wise data from July to January (up to January 13) also shows a consistent and sustained rise in compost rake movement compared to the same period last year.
The improved performance has been made possible through close coordination among the Ministry of Railways, ports, state governments, and compost companies.
Timely planning, continuous monitoring, and effective collaboration ensured smooth logistics and uninterrupted compost availability to farmers across the country.
