Patna, June 5, 2024: Bihar’s politics continues to revolve around its three major forces—the BJP, JDU, and Grand Alliance—and history once again shows that whenever any two of these align, they secure victory. This pattern was seen in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly, and now again in 2024, where the BJP—JDU alliance delivered a win.
Grand Alliance’s performance in 2024 is better than in 2019:
The NDA secured 30 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, though this marks a decline of nine seats compared to its near-sweep of 39 seats in 2019. In terms of vote share, NDA partners together polled 45.5%, while the Grand Alliance secured 36.47%, leaving a vote-share gap of just 9.03%.
RJD obtained 22.14%, BJP—20.52%, JDU—18.52%, Congress—9.20%, LJPRV—6.43%, others—23.09%. By contrast, in 2019, the BJP had topped the vote share table with 24.05% followed by JDU (22.26%), RJD (15.68%), and Congress (7.85%).
Party-wise gains and losses:
JDU—The JDU suffered a 4.24% drop in vote share compared to 2019, leading to the loss of four seats.
The BJP’s vote share fell from 24.05% to 20.52%–a decline of 3.98%. This contributed to the party losing five seats: Buxar, Arrah, Sasaram, Patliputra, and Aurangabad.
LJPRV had polled 8.1% in 2019. Its vote share fell by 1.52%, yet it delivered a 100% strike rate in 2024, winning all five seats it contested.
Grand Alliance performance:
The RJD did not win a single seat in 2019 but had a robust 15.68% vote share. In 2014, it surged to 22.14%–a rise of 6.46%–translating into four victories, Patliputra, Buxar, Jehanabad, and Aurangabad.
Congress increased its vote share from 7.85% (2019) to 9.20% (2024), a gain of 1.35%, helping it win three seats—Kishanganj, Katihar, and Sasaram—compared to just one seat last time.
Performance of other parties:
CPI-ML—2.99%, CPI—1.31%, CPM—0.87%, BSP—1.74%, AIMIM—0.88%, others—13.29% the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), despite contesting three seats, failed to win any.
A standout performance came from the CPIML, which exceeded expectations by winning two of the three seats it contested. Sudama Prasad defeated Union Minister R. K. Singh in Arrah, while Rajaram Singh Kushwaha beat actor Pawan Singh in Karakat, where NDA’s Upendra Kushwaha finished third.
