Patna, August 12, 2025: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday interacted with electricity consumers from several districts of Bihar who are availing the state’s free electricity scheme of up to 125 units per month.
Calling it a “revolutionary step,” Kumar praised the Energy Department for its role in public welfare.
“We have implemented free electricity up to 125 units, benefiting 1.89 crore consumers across Bihar. We are also promoting solar energy—currently installed on all government buildings—and the government is ready to help consumers install it in their homes,” Kumar said during the virtual interaction.
Samrat Choudhary praised Nitish Kumar for his power welfare initiative:
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary highlighted that, unlike other states, Bihar does not charge for the entire usage if a consumer exceeds the subsidized slab.
“Charges are applied only after crossing 125 units. The state government is providing Rs. 20,000 crore in electricity subsidies to the consumers,” he said.

Energy Minister Vijendra Yadav appealed to citizens to use electricity responsibly, warning against misuse of the free supply.
“Don’t misuse electricity if you are getting it free,” he cautioned.
The Nitish Kumar government has been depositing the subsidy for July:
The state has started depositing July’s subsidy amount directly into consumer accounts.
In August too, consumers will not need to recharge for up to 125 units. To promote the scheme and gather feedback, special programs are being held at 3,000 locations across Bihar, with 15 lakh consumers interacting with the CM via video conferencing and webcasts, including at 152 sites in Patna district.

In a promotional push, the government has also redesigned electricity bills to feature a photo of CM Nitish Kumar, seen as both an informational and image-building move ahead of elections.
