Patna, August 5, 2025: The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for heavy rain (65-115.5 mm) in Kisshanganj, West Champaran and Gopalganj on Tuesday, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and wind speed reaching 30-40 km/h.

The persistent monsoon activity is attributed to cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar and the monsoon trough passing through Chhapra, raising concern over worsening flood conditions.

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in North Bihar on Monday. Purnea recorded 170.6 mm, Darbhanga 155.8 mm, Sitamararhi 136.4 mm, Sheohar 134.2 mm and Kishanganj 74.4 mm of rain.

Danapur in Patna received 87.6 mm of rainfall, and waterlogging in the city affected life.

Flood threat rises as rivers swell due to heavy rain:

The Ganga River has surged above the danger mark at several key locations, like 20 cm above the danger level at Gandhi Ghat, Patna, 16 cm above at Hathidah, and 13 cm above at Kahagaon in Bhagalpur district.

There is some relief in Munger as the district administration has recorded 63 cm below the danger level of the Ganga River. The danger level of the Ganga River in Munger is 39.33 cm.

The Ganga River alarming rise from Buxar to Kahalgaon has heightened the risk of floods.

Other major rivers, including Kosi, Gandak, Bagmati, Son, Punpun and Mahananda, are also swelling, putting pressure on embankments, especially in North Bihar, where 24×7 monitoring has been ordered by the Water Resources Department.

In the Bhagalpur Diara region, the situation has turned serious, prompting the administration to begin evacuating people from low-lying areas.

Heavy rain to continue for a week:

Moderate to heavy rain (15-64 mm) is also expected in South Bihar districts such as Patna, Buxar, and Vaishali.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, trees and standing water.

While rain may benefit paddy cultivation, there’s a growing risk of crop damage due to waterlogging and floods.

Disaster management teams are on high alert, and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed officials to begin relief operations immediately after reviewing the situation.
