Patna, July 25, 2025: There is big relief news for the people of North Bihar as, after a long wait of 15 years, vehicular traffic will start on the Hajipur-Muzaffarpur bypass from next week.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has preparations for the inauguration of the first phase of the first phase of the project.
In this phase, two lanes of the eastern part of the Hajipur-Muzaffarpur bypass will be opened for traffic, while all four lanes will become fully operational by the last week of August this year.
Hajipur-Muzaffarpur bypass will provide smooth connectivity to North Bihar:
With the opening of this bypass, travelling from Mizaffarpur, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, and other districts of North Bihar to Patna will become easier.
Passengers will get a jam-free alternative route, significantly reducing travel time.
According to Arvind Kumar, Project Director, NHAI Patna Division, blacktopping and related construction of the eastern section have been completed.

The only remaining task is removing the shuttering of the Rail Over Bridge (ROB) at Kaparapura railway crossing.
Once the railway block is provided, the ROB will be opened, and two lanes will be operational for public use immediately.
Work on the remaining two lanes (western part) is progressing rapidly and is expected to open by the last week of August, making all four lanes functional simultaneously.
Addressing construction challenges:
During construction on the 17 km Hajipur-Muzaffarpur bypass, some side flanks collapsed. NHAI has repaired these promptly using concrete and is conducting daily inspections with two surveillance vehicles to monitor for rain cuts or soil collapse.
Construction started about 15 years ago, with a project cost of Rs. 216 crore.
Land acquisition issues, compensation disputes, and administrative hurdles caused repeated delays.
After the Patna High Court’s intervention in 2023, construction resumed.
Despite three deadline extensions, the project is now near completion, bringing major infrastructural relief to North Bihar.
