Patna September 29, 2024: The flood situation in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district has escalated after a 35-meter section of the Bagmati River embankment was breached on Sunday.
This breach occurred at Madhkal village in the Belsand block, causing significant concerns for the local population and authorities. Floodwaters have inundated parts of the district, adding to the distress faced by residents.
Abhishek Kumar, the executive engineer in charge of the central flood control room in Patna, confirmed that the water resource department and disaster management officials have been instructed to begin repairs on the broken embankment. He also reassured that other embankments in the state remain secure for the time being.
However, the Bagmati River is currently flowing above the danger level mark at several locations, including Dheng, Sonekhan and Chandauli blocks in Sitamarhi district, Khataunja and Benibad in Muzaffarpur and Dubadhar in Sheohar district.
Apart from the Baghmati River, the Kosi River is flowing above the danger level at Bausa in Supaul, Baltara in Khagaria and Kursela in Katihar districts. Gandak River is overflowing at Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj district.

A maximum of 66.38 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Sitamarhi district, 64.74 mm in Sheohar, 50.99 mm at East Champaran and 30.40 mm of rainfall recorded in Khagaria district.

The surge in these rivers compounded by heavy rainfall in Nepal, has worsened the flood situation in Araria district, with the track at Jogbani Railway Station, disrupting transportation.
The state remains on high alert as water levels continue to rise in various districts.
