Patna August 9: Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar inspected the banks of Ganga River in Patna on Friday.
The water level of Ganga River has increased in the past few days due to the heavy rain in the catchment areas of rivers which are tributaries of Son River. Son River is one of the tributaries of the Ganga River.
During the inspection, Nitish Kumar was accompanied by Chaitanya Prasad, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resource Department, Patna district magistrate Dr Chandrashekher Singh and other senior officers.
Nitish Kumar directed the officers to implement immediate measures to prevent flooding in Patna. He has asked the officials for round-the-clock monitoring of embankments to ensure stability and to address any signs of weakness or breach promptly.
“The water levels of the Ganga River increased due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of rivers in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. It has significantly raised the water level of Son River, a tributary of the Ganga River, leading to a subsequent rise in Ganga River’s water level,” said Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the water resource minister of the Bihar government.
The water level of the Ganga River at Gandhi Ghat Patna exceeded the danger level mark. The designated danger level for this location is 48.6 meters but it is flowing at 48.82 meters.

The Diara areas (Saran and Vaishali regions) of the Ganga River are submerged in water. Additionally, the water level rose to the edge of the city of Patna, posing a threat to urban areas if water levels continue to rise.
The Ganga River is also flowing above the danger level mark in Bhagalpur’s Kahalgaon. The designated danger level of the river at that place is 31.09 meters while it is flowing at 31.10 meters.
In addition to the Ganga River, other major rivers in Bihar are also flowing above their danger marks due to the heavy rain.
Gandak River flows above the danger level mark at Gopalganj’s Dumaria Ghat, Kosi River in Baltara located in Khagaria district, Bagmati River is above the danger level at Sonakhan in Sitamarhi and Dubbadhar in Sheohar district, Katauja and Benibad in Muzaffarpur.
Kamla Balan is flowing above the danger level mark in Jhanjharpur of Madhubani district.
