Patna, June 10, 2024: A day after Prime Minister Modi and 71 other MPs took oath, the NDA government on Monday allocated ministry portfolios, giving eight berths to MPs from Bihar—four as Cabinet ministers and four as Ministers of State.

Among them are leaders from the JDU, BJP, LJPRV, and HAMS, reflecting the NDA’s internal power balance after its strong performance in Bihar during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Lalan Singh finds a cabinet berth in the Modi government:

Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh (JDU, Munger) appointed Cabinet Minister with charge of:

Panchayati Raj, Animal husbandry, fisheries & dairy.

These departments hold significant relevance for Bihar’s rural development and agrarian-dependent economy.

Chirag Paswan (LJPRV, Hajipur) has been given dual responsibilities as Cabinet Minister of Sports, Food Processing Industries.

Chirag, who leads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), has emphasized the potential for large-scale food processing units in Bihar.

Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAMS, Gaya) appointed Cabinet Minister in charge of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Ministry—an area seen as key for Bihar’s industrial push.

Giriraj Singh (BJP, Begusarai) returned to the Union Cabinet as Minister of Textiles. The Ministry is considered significant for Bihar, given its potential in jute, handloom, and the growing “Chanpatia model” of textile entrepreneurship.

Ministers of state from Bihar:

Nityanand Rai (BJP)—MoS agriculture and farmer welfare.

Satish Chandra Dubey (BJP)—MoS Coal and Mines.

Raj Bhusan Chaudhary (LJPRV)—MoS Jal Shakti.

Bihar’s strong presence in NDA 3.0:

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA swept 30 of 40 seats in Bihar.

JDU—12 seats, BJP—12 seats, LJPRV—5 seats, HAMS—1 seat.

The sizable representation of Bihar in the Union Council of Ministers is being seen as the NDA’s acknowledgment of the state’s political importance and the crucial role regional parties played in the fractured national mandate.
