Patna, February 7, 2026: Following his appointment as National Working President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Tejashwi Yadav was formally handed over the party’s reins at a ceremony held at the RJD office on Saturday.
During the event, the party supporters symbolically crowned him with a silver crown, underscoring the significance of the leadership.
With this development, the leadership of the RJD has officially passed to the second generation of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family, marking a decisive generational shift within the party.
The move is widely viewed as a strategic step to prepare the party for future political battles.
Tejashwi Yadav’s journey from cricket to politics:
Tejashwi Yadav’s political rise has been swift. Before entering politics, he was associated with cricket, but his political journey began in earnest after the 2015 Bihar Assembly elections.
As Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) Government, Tejashwi Yadav carved out an independent political identity.

Over the years, he has emerged as the principal face of the RJD, playing a decisive role in making the party the single largest party in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.
RJD legacy and generational shift:
The RJD was founded in 1997 by Lalu Prasad Yadav after his split from Janata Dal.
Rooted in the politics of social justice, the RJD has historically represented the interests of backward classes, Dalits and minorities.
During the height of Mandal-era politics, the party became a dominant force in Bihar, shaping the state’s political discourse for decades in power and in opposition.

The formal handover of leadership to Tejashwi Yadav is being seen as a clear generational transition.
While Lalu Prasad Yadav is expected to continue as the party’s ideological mentor, the responsibility of organizational management and electoral strategy will now firmly rest with Tejashwi Yadav.
Political observers believe that Tejashwi Yadav’s elevation as national working president will inject fresh energy into the RJD, enabling it to approach the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha and 2030 Assembly elections with a more assertive and modern strategy.
Analysts also suggest that this leadership shift could have far-reaching implications for Bihar’s political landscape, potentially reshaping alliances, voter outreach, and the balance of power in the state.
