Patna, March 24, 2024: Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala Governor Nikhil Kumar on Wednesday announced that he will contest the Lok Sabha election 2024 from Aurangabad, despite the seat being allotted to the RJD under the Mahagathbandhan pact.
Nikhil Kumar’s statement:
“The people of Aurangabad are expecting a Congress candidate in the election. Five years ago, the Congress party made a mistake by leaving this seat due to the coalition arrangement. We cannot repeat it again,” Nikhil Kumar said.
He claimed that local Congress supporters have urged him to contest “at any cost.”
Taking a dig at RJD nominee Abhay Kushwaha, he said, “He does not know the ground reality of Aurangabad. We have been working here for the last 10 years and know the local issues well.”
Political Context:
The RJD has already fielded Abhay Kushwaha as the Mahagathbandhan candidate from Aurangabad.
The BJP currently holds the seat with Sushil Kumar as the sitting MP.
Polling in Aurangabad will be held in the first phase on April 19; only two days remain for nominations.
What’s at Stake?
Aurangabad has traditionally been considered a Congress stronghold, but internal disagreements within the Mahagathbandhan could lead to a split in votes, potentially benefiting the NDA.
