Patna, June 7, 2024: The demand for special status for Bihar has resurfaced strongly, with NDA alliance partners leader Veena Devi pointing out that the issue is in the interest of the state.
Even before the formation of the new NDA government at the Centre, this renewed pressure could pose a significant challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days.
On Thursday, JDU senior leader and spokesperson KC Tyagi reiterated the party’s longstanding support for Bihar’s special status demand.
Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) also signaled alignment with the cause.
Veena Devi said her party chief is looking after all issues:
LJPRV’s newly elected MP from Vaishali, Veena Devi, said the party stands firmly behind the demand.
“We want the welfare of Bihar because we belong to Bihar,” Veena Devi said. However, she clarified that the party has not placed any formal demands before the new government.
“Chirag Paswan is our national president, and he is overseeing everything,” she added.
Earlier in the day, Chirag Paswan chaired a meeting of the LJPRV Parliamentary Party at his residence in New Delhi, attended by all five newly elected MPs. After the meeting, the MPs unanimously elected Chirag Paswan as the leader of the parliamentary party. LJPRV contested and won all five seats—Samastipur, Khagaria, Hajipur, Vaishali, and Jamui.
The special status issue is being strongly raised by Tejashwi Yadav:
The push for special state status is not new. Political leaders across party lines—including Tejashwi Yadav, RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, and newly elected Buxar MP Sudhakar Singh—have long advocated for it. Some RJD leaders have even suggested that JDU should join the NDA government only if the special status and a special package for Bihar are secured.
With JDU once again emerging as a crucial player in government formation at the Centre, the special status debate is expected to gain further momentum in the coming days.
