Patna, May 1, 2024: Amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police has intensified its monitoring of social media activities to curb the spread of objectionable and misleading content.
EOU is closely monitoring the social media platforms:
An EOU official said that the department has so far received 95 complaints and registered 10 FIRs against individuals accused of posting sensitive, misleading, or inflammatory content online.
“Social media platforms have been under our close watch ever since the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on March 16. All complaints received so far are related to election-related violations,” the official said.
EOU wrote letters to social media companies for action against violators:
The EOU has written to major social media companies, urging them to take action under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and has issued notices to offenders directing them to delete objectionable posts.
“After notices were served, 38 objectionable posts were removed,” the official added.
The unit has also coordinated with local law enforcement in districts such as Nawada and Nalanda to verify online content and take legal action where necessary.
“In some cases, the investigation becomes challenging as offenders create fake accounts and provide false addresses,” the official noted.
