Patna, June 1, 2024: The BJP’s legal and election cell has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission against RJD national president Lalu Prasad Yadav, alleging violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during Saturday’s polling in Patna.
BJP election cell claimed that displaying a symbol inside the polling booth is an offence:
S.D. Sanjay, state president of the BJP legal and election cell, claimed that Lalu Prasad Yadav displayed his party symbol inside a polling booth, amounting to an electoral offence.
According to Sanjay, Lalu Prasad arrived at the Veterinary College polling station in Patna along with his wife Rabri Devi and daughter Rohini Acharya to cast his vote.
He alleged that the RJD chief had a green coloured towel bearing images of the party’s lantern symbol draped over his shoulder during the visit.
“Such an act amounts to a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Lalu Prasad Yadav was displaying the lantern symbol and indirectly encouraging voters inside the polling premises,” Sanjay said.
Sanjay urged the ECI to lodge a complaint against Lalu Prasad Yadav:
He added that carrying or displaying any party symbol inside a polling booth constitutes an offence under Section 130 of the Representation of the People Act and Section 171 of the IPC, which pertain to undue influence and election-related misconduct.
“I have requested the Election Commission to take immediate action and lodge an FIR against him,” Sanjay said.
