Patna, June 26, 2024: A teenage girl had a close shave in Sitamarhi district on Tuesday evening while she was making a reel on a rooftop.
A video of the incident has surfaced online.
In the clip, the lightning bolt is seen hitting the upper portion of the house while 15-year-old Sania Kumari is standing close to it.
The teenage girl was making reels when the incident occurred:
She immediately ran for safety, but because her phone was fixed in one position, the entire incident got recorded.
The impact of the strike also reportedly shook the surrounding area.
The incident took place at Sirsia village under the Bela police station limits.
Local residents said that as soon as it started raining, the teenage girl went to the roof of her neighbour Devnarayan Bhagat’s house to shoot reels.
A debate triggered over smartphone use during the rain:
The episode has triggered a debate over whether using a smartphone during lightning is unsafe.
Experts say there is no universally accepted scientific study proving that smartphone use directly attracts lightning.
However, some researchers argue that certain electromagnetic emissions from devices can theoretically increase risk.
As a precaution, switching off phones during a thunderstorm is considered a safer option.
Lightning strikes are common in the monsoon months and claim multiple lives every year, particularly among those working in open fields or taking shelter under trees during rain.
