The election commission registered 9.66% polling till 9 am on Bihar’s 8 seats.

Patna, May 25, 2024: After the first two hours of polling on Saturday, the Election Commission has recorded 9.66% voter turnout across eight Lok Sabha constituencies of Bihar, where voting is being held in the sixth phase of the general elections.

The Election Commission recorded the highest polling in Vaishali:

According to the Election Commission, Vaishali registered the highest turnout at 11.95% followed by Siwan recorded 10.54% and Gopalganj 9.49%.

The Election Commission has also recorded impressive voter turnout at Paschim Champaran (9.35%), Sheohar (9.25%), Maharajganj (9.06%), Purvi Champaran (8.06%) and Valmikinagar (8.55%).

In Vaishali, a direct contest is underway between LJPRV candidate Veena Singh and RJD’s Munna Shukla. The constituency saw the highest early turnout, reflecting strong voter enthusiasm.

In Siwan, this constituency remains one of the most high-profile seats in this phase. Hena Sahab, wife of late RJD leader Mohammad Shahabuddi, is contesting as an independent, taking on JDU’s Vijaylaxmi Kushwaha and RJD’s Awadh Bihari Choudhary.

Tight security has been put in place at all booths, with central forces stationed at sensitive locations.

In Gopalganj (SC-Reserved seat), the main contest is between JDU’s Alok Kumar Suman and VIP’s Premnath Chanchal, representing the Grand Alliance.

According to the Election Commission, a total of 20,24,673 voters, including 10,22,771 male electors and 10,01,902 female electors, are eligible to vote at 2006 polling stations.

Security has been tightened with paramilitary forces, local police and a mounted patrol unit deployed in the Diara region.

In Paschim Champaran, BJP’s Sanjay Jaiswal faces Congress Madan Mohan Tiwari in this key constituency, where 1,756 polling stations have been set up for 17,54,210 voters.

The administration has focused on ensuring a peaceful and high-turnout election.

In Sheohar, voters were seen in long queues early in the day. A total of 1865 polling stations have been established for 18,25,237 voters.

The Election Commission has installed webcasting facilities at 120 polling stations, appointed micro observers at 84 booths, and implemented videography at all model and women-managed polling stations.

The main contest here is between JDU’s Lovely Anand and RJD Ritu Jaiswal.

In Purvi Champaran, a face-off is taking place between BJP’s Radha Mohan Singh, a sitting MP, and VIP’s Rajesh Kushwaha of the Grand Alliance.

There are 1743 polling stations for 17,90,761 voters, including 21 third-gender voters. The constituency covers six assembly segments.

In Maharajganj, the constituency has 1916 polling stations, of which 958 are under live webcasting.

With 19,34,937 total voters, including 10,08,509 men and 9,26,424 women, polling is being monitored across 212 sectors.

Micro observers are stationed at 280 polling stations to ensure transparency.

In Valmiki Nagar, voting began smoothly across this border constituency, which reported 8.55% turnout till 5 a.m. JDU’s Sunil Kumar Kushwaha is up against RJD’s Deepak Yadav.

Security and monitoring:

Across all eight constituencies, tight security arrangements have been implemented. The Election Commission has deployed central armed forces, micro observers, and webcasting units to ensure free and fair polling. Voter enthusiasm was visible, with queues forming outside several booths early in the morning despite the rising temperature.

Polling will continue till 6 p.m.
