The Bihar flood impacted 45.02 lakh people in 30 districts.
Patna October 4, 2024: Bihar has experienced severe flooding this year, impacting a total of 45.02 lakh people across multiple locations in 30 districts.
According to the state government’s official report, the flooding occurred in two phases.
The first phase started in the third week in 12 districts all along the Ganga River and its tributaries including Son, Jirain, Lokain, Punpun and others. During the first phase, 28.34 lakh people were affected by it.
The second phase started in the fourth week of September this year mainly in North Bihar, Kosi and Seemanchal regions of Bihar.
It has turned devastated due to excessive rainfall in neighbouring Nepal. Due to this, rivers like Kosi, Bagmati, Gandak, Ghaghra, Kamla Balan, Mahananda and others not only overflown but breached the embankments in more than 7 places.
During the second phase, 16.68 lakh people in 18 districts were affected by it.
Keeping in view of the large-scale devastation, the Bihar government released Rs 7 thousand to each of the flood-affected families of the first phase on Friday.
The state government has identified 4.39 lakh families in the first phase and given relief compensation to the tune of Rs 307 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The state government has announced that relief funds for those affected in the second phase will be distributed soon.
In the midst of relief efforts, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with water resource minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar and others visited the flood-hit Darbhanga district to assess conditions and inspect community kitchen and food packaging units set up to assist flood victims.
Following the visit, a meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s residence with key officials including Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar, Additional chief secretary of Disaster Management Pratyay Amrit and others.
The meeting focused on the ongoing relief efforts and strategies to manage the crisis effectively.
