Patna, September 25, 2024: Shravan Kumar, the rural development minister of Bihar, claimed 36.6 lakh houses provided under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMGAY) from 2015 to 2024.

Shravan Kumar stated that out of the 37 lakh houses allocated to Bihar by the central government under this scheme.

Looking ahead to the financial year 2024-25, the state plans to provide permanent housing to 5.71 lakh poor families, which includes 2.43 lakh houses under PMGAY and a target of 3.28 homes under the Prime Minister Urban Housing Scheme (PMUHS).

Sharvan Kumar further noted that the Bihar government has already approved the construction of 1.21 lakh houses under the rural housing scheme for 2024-25, with 82000 families having received the first instalment of Rs 40000. This disbursement was part of a large initiative by PM Narendra Modi during an event in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on September 17.

In addition, Sharvan Kumar explained, “A list of 25 lakh beneficiaries for PMGAY was prepared in 2019, of which 13.5 lakh people are still awaiting houses in Bihar. To reduce this waiting list, the state government has requested an additional allocation of 6 lakh homes from the central government.”

Earlier Sharvan Kumar met with the union minister to address this need, emphasizing that this allocation would help significantly reduce the backlog in housing for the rural poor.

He reveals that during the recent caste survey, about 94 lakh poor families have been identified. The Bihar government has requested the inclusion of those left out from the PMGAY and the central government has responded positively on it.

Shravan Kumar emphasized the cost-sharing mechanism under PMGAY, where 60% of the funds come from the central government, while 40% are contributed by the state. In 11 specific districts of Bihar, each families listed under the scheme received Rs 1.25 lakh for housing where 1.20 lakh distributed in three instalments.

The process involves serving land, uploading the details on the government portal and releasing the first instalment upon approval, followed by two additional instalments.
