Jan Suraj Party will replace the candidate for Tarari by-election.

Patna October 21, 2024: Jan Suraj Party’s chief Prashant Kishor, who has set his sights on forming the government in Bihar in 2025, faced a significant setback in his first major political contest during the by-polls.

Jan Suraj Party had fielded Lt General Krishna Singh for the Tarari by-poll:

Jan Suraj party had announced retired Lieutenant General Krishna Singh as its candidate for the Tarari assembly seat in Bhojpur district.

However, a critical mistake was made in the process: Krishna Singh, despite being a native of Karath village in the Tarari constituency, is a registered voter in Noida, not Bihar.

This disqualifies him from contesting in the assembly by-election, a candidate must be a registered voter of that state.

In Krishna Singh’s case, his voter registration remained in Noida during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and it can not be changed due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the by-elections.

Jan Suraj acknowledged the mistake:

Acknowledging the mistake, Jan Suraj Party officials admitted that the decision to field Krishna Singh was based on his strong connection to his native place.

“While Krishna Singh is originally from Karath village in Tarari, he had enrolled himself in the voter list of Noida during the 2019 Lok Sabha election, and his voter registration was never transferred back to Bihar. The party is now closely examining the “technical aspect” of the issue to determine whether there is any way to address the problem within the confines of the current electoral process,” said an official spokesperson of the Jan Suraj Party.

He further said, “However, because the MCC has already been enforced in the four assembly constituencies where by-polls are being held, it is not possible to change the voter registration during this period. If the technical team cannot resolve the issue, the Jan Suraj party is prepared to change its candidate for the Tarari seat,” he said.

The Jan Suraj party is now working on fielding a new candidate for Tarari, while Krishna Singh will still play an active role in the campaign. The announcement of the new candidate is expected soon.

This type of error is not unprecedented. A similar mistake was made by Congress in 2020 during the Bihar Legislative Council elections when Tariq Anwar was nominated as a candidate. However, it was discovered just before the nomination deadline that Anwar was a voter from Delhi and therefore ineligible. Congress had to hastily replace him with Sameer Kumar Singh, who eventually became a candidate.

Such a mistake is a learning experience for every political party:

For Jan Suraj Party, this episode serves as a learning experience in the early stages of the political journey. While it highlights a lapse in procedural diligence, the party has the opportunity to recover by quickly addressing the issue and focusing on campaign strategy moving forward.
