New Delhi, June 8, 2026: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the largest edition of the tournament in football history.
For the first time, 48 teams will compete for the coveted trophy, while a record 104 matches will be played across three host nations—the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As the countdown to the global football spectacle continues, fans around the world will be keeping a close eye on several star players who are expected to shape the tournament with their talent and leadership.
Lionel Messi will be the most popular to watch at the FIFA World Cup 2026:
Leading the team is Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Although the legendary forward will be nearly 39 years old by the time the tournament begins, he remains one of the sport’s most influential figures.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning captain continues to perform at the highest level, having earned consecutive MLS MVP awards with Inter Miami CF.
The 2026 edition is expected to be Messi’s sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, and he will once again be central to Argentina’s title ambitions.
Another player expected to attract significant attention is Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi.
Widely regarded as one of the best right-backs in world football, the 27-year-old combines blistering pace with exceptional attacking ability.

A Key figure for both Paris Saint-Germain and the Moroccan national team, Hakimi will aim to help Morocco build on its historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup—the first by an African nation.
France’s defensive strength is expected to be anchored by William Saliba. The commanding centre-back has developed into one of the finest defenders in the game, thanks to his combination of physical presence, speed, and composure in possession.
Alongside his club teammate Gabriel Magalhaes at Arsenal FC, Saliba has established himself among the elite defenders in world football.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham remains one of the brightest young stars in the sport.
While his most recent season with Real Madrid CF may not have fully matched the lofty expectations created by his earlier performances, the 22-year-old continues to be a crucial player for both club and country. Having already been named Players of the Year in both Germany’s Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga, Bellingham’s versatility and all-around game will be vital to England’s hopes.
Portugal will look to the creativity and intelligence of Joao Neves in midfield.
At just 21 years old, Neves has become a regular starter for both Portugal and Paris Saint-Germain. Although not physically imposing, his vision, technical quality, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches make him one of Europe’s most promising midfielders.
The opposition would keep an eye on Spanish player Pedri:
Spain’s midfield will once again be orchestrated by Pedri, whose elegant style has drawn comparisons with legendary Spanish midfielders, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta. A product of the system that possesses exceptional technical ability and football intelligence.

After battling injury setbacks in recent years, the Spanish star enters the World Cup cycle in strong form and is expected to be a key figure for his national team.
With established legends, world-class defenders, and a new generation of midfield maestros preparing to take center stage, the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to deliver unforgettable moments and showcase some of the finest talent the sport has to offer.
