Patna, March 22, 2024: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday announced Awadesh Kumar Rai as its candidate for the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in Bihar for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
CPI general secretary D Raja said the party would contest the seat as part of the INDIA bloc alliance.
CPI announced its candidates during a press conference:
“We have given the ticket to Awadesh Kumar Rai to contest the Begusarai seat of Bihar. He will be the candidate of the India bloc for this seat,” Raja told reporters.
The polling in the Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency will be held in the fourth phase on May 13.
Raja added that CPI had demanded two seats in Bihar.
“RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has given us one seat in Begusarai. We are expecting one more seat and negotiations are underway,” he said.
Congress missed out on Kanhaiya Kumar’s home turf:
Sources revealed that the Congress party was eyeing Begusarai for former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, a native of the district.
Kanhaiya has contested the seat on a CPI ticket in 2019 but lost to BJP’s Giriraj Singh by a huge margin.
Since joining Congress, there were expectations he might get a second chance, but RJD’s decision to allot the seat to CPI effectively ruled that out.
Meanwhile, RJD has already declared several candidates even though the INDIA bloc’s final seat-sharing formula in Bihar is yet to be formally announced.
