Patna October 1, 2024: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has instructed the authorities to seek the assistance of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to deliver essential supplies to flood-affected areas where access is difficult.

The decision follows his day-long aerial survey of regions affected by flood from the Kosi, Gandak and Ganga Rivers.

The Bihar Chief Minister emphasized the need for urgent relief and rescue operations, directing that food packets and other necessities should be air-dropped by IAF helicopters in inaccessible areas.

Nitish Kumar was accompanied during the aerial survey by senior officials, including Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Principal Secretary to the Bihar Chief Minister Deepak Kumar and Additional Chief Secretary of Disaster Management Pratyay Amrit.

“We have directed districts magistrates of the affected districts to closely monitor embankments around the clock and ensure engineers remain alert and stationed in these regions. I also asked them to establish smooth coordination among various government agencies, including disaster management, water resource, agriculture and other departments,” Kumar said.

The Bihar Chief Minister highlighted that the rescue of people from the flood-affected areas is the state’s top priority. He directed officials to provide immediate assistance, including dry food packets, tarpaulin sheets, boats and medicines.

He also stressed the importance of running community kitchens and establishing temporary shelters for displaced individuals. He also asked them to pay special attention to ensure fodder for cattle.

“The flood victims have the first right of the state’s exchequer,” he said while hinting that all necessary financial support will be provided to the flood-affected victims,” Kumar said.

The Bihar Chief Minister highlighted the need for the administration to ensure the provision of temporary toilets, tents, community kitchens, and full lighting facilities for those taking shelter on embankments, roads and other areas.
