Bihar cabinet approves over 26,000 jobs and increases ministerial allowances ahead of election year.

Patna April 8, 2025: In a significant move ahead of the upcoming elections, the Bihar cabinet approved 27 proposals during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday.

Among the key decisions, the cabinet cleared the creation of over 26,000 government posts across various departments, including agriculture, healthcare, and language services.

First Bihar cabinet meeting after budget session:

This was the first Bihar cabinet meeting following the conclusion of the Budget session of the Bihar Legislature, held at the cabinet Secretariat in Patna with the presence of a majority of state ministers.

The cabinet sanctioned 2,590 posts in the Agriculture Department, 35 data entry operators in the Staff Selection Commission, 36 posts on Ayush Hospitals, 3,306 posts of Urdu Translators, 48 posts in the Liquor Prohibition Department and over 20,000 additional posts in the Health Department.

The large-scale job creation is seen as a strategic move by the state government in light of the upcoming Assembly elections, aimed at boosting employment and appeasing key voter segments.

Hike in Salary and Allowances for Ministers:

In a move that will impact state finances, the Bihar cabinet also approved amendments to the 2006 rules regarding salaries and allowances of ministers.

Under this proposal, the monthly salary for state and deputy ministers was raised from Rs.50, 000 to Rs, 60,000 regional allowances increased from Rs. 55, 000 to Rs. 65,000 regional allowances increased from Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 70,000 daily allowances were enhanced from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 3, 500 hospitality allowances for state ministers raised from Rs. 24,000 to Rs, 29,500 and for deputy ministers from Rs, 23, 500 to Rs, 39, 000.

Travel allowances increased from Rs. 15/km to Rs.25/ km:

While critics may see this as an election-year perk, the government maintains the decision ensures ministers can fulfill their executive responsibilities effectively.

Apart from that, the Bihar cabinet also approved Rs. 38 crore for video conferencing facilities in all revenue courts of Bihar, approved new service rules, Bihar Education Administration Relation Rules 2025, and Bihar Drug Laboratory Education Service Rules 2025.

The Bihar cabinet also did the allotment of land for Guru Govind Singh Hospital, Bihar Contingency Fund increased to Rs. 10.000 crore Extension of the Bihar Industrial Investment Promotion Policy 2016 till 2025.

Appointment of retired officers Baidyanath Yadav and Pankaj Kumar as Consultants in their respective departments. Cabinet has also cacked of Dr. Ramraj Raman.

These decisions underscore the Nitish Kumar government’s dual focus on job creation and administrative expansion aligning with its broader election-year strategy.
