New Delhi, June 26, 2024: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday assured full cooperation of the party to the Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to ensure smooth functioning of the House.

He also congratulated Birla on being elected Speaker for a second consecutive term.

“On behalf of the entire Opposition, I would like to congratulate you on your successful election for the second time,” Gandhi said, while speaking in the Lok Sabha.

Calling the Lok Sabha the voice of India’s people, Gandhi said the Speaker was the final arbiter of the voice.

He said that while the government holds political power, the Opposition also represents the mandate of the people.

This time, the Opposition represents significantly more voice of the Indian people than it did last time,” he remarked.

Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition wanted the House to run smoothly, but on the basis of trust and adequate special privileges for dissent.

“It is very important that the voice of the Opposition is allowed to be represented in this House. I am confident that you will allow us to speak and represent the voice of the people of India,” he said.

He said the issue was not just the efficiency of the House, but how much of India’s voice was allowed to be heard.

“The idea that you can run the House efficiently by silencing the voice of the Opposition is non-democratic. This election has shown that the people of India expect the Opposition to defend the Constitution. By allowing us to speak, you will be doing your duty of defending the Constitution of India,” Gandhi said.
