New Delhi, June 2, 2024: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal surrendered at Tihar Jail on Sunday after the expiry of his interim bail granted by the Supreme Court in the alleged liquor policy case.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy probe.
The Delhi CM was granted bail by the Supreme Court:
On May 10, the Supreme Court granted him 21 days’ interim bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, with a clear condition that he must surrender on June 2 without fail.
As the surrender date neared, the Delhi CM sought a seven-day extension, citing the need for medical examinations.
The Supreme Court, however, declined to urgently hear the plea and asked him to approach the trial court instead.
“Following this, the Delhi CM moved the Rouse Avenue Court seeking both an extension of interim bail and regular bail.
ED opposed the bail plea:
During the hearing, the ED opposed his request, accusing the Delhi Chief Minister of concealing facts and making false statements, including regarding his health condition.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected Kejriwal’s plea for an extension of interim bail. Consequently, he surrendered at Tihar Jail on Sunday afternoon.
The court is scheduled to hear his interim bail plea again on June 5.
