Patna, April 8, 2024: The Election Commission of India on Monday allotted a ‘Scissor’ symbol to Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, confirming his entry into the Purnea Lok Sabha contest as an independent candidate.
Election Commission allotted a symbol after Yadav did not withdraw his name:
The development came after Yadav did not withdraw his nomination by the final deadline today.
He had filed his nomination papers on April 4.
“This election symbol will shape the future of Purnea. My aim is to lift the region out of backwardness and provide employment to 10,000 families over the next five years,” Yadav said after receiving his symbol.
Yadav had earlier merged his Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) with the Congress on March 20, expecting to contest Purnea on the party’s ticket.
However, when the seat went to the RJD under the Grand Alliance’s seat-sharing arrangement, Yadav entered the fray as an independent.
With this move, the Purnea constituency has now turned into a three-cornered battle between Bima Bharti (Grand Alliance), Santosh Kuashwaha (NDA), and Pappu Yadav (Independent).
The Election Commission has announced polling in Purnea in the second phase:
Polling in Purnea will take place on April 26.
Earlier, Congress leaders, including state president Akhilesh Singh, had urged Yadav to withdraw from the race, warning of disciplinary action if he continued in the contest.
