Patna, September 20, 2026: Political activity has intensified in Bihar ahead of the elections to eight Legislative Council seats, with the Jan Suraaj Party entering into a contest.
Jan Suraaj’s founder and Bankipur MLA Prashant Kishor announced candidates for five of the eight seats on Sunday.
The party has said it intends to contest all eight seats, with the remaining three candidates expected to be announced soon.
Five candidates of Jan Suraaj Party:
The five candidates announced by the Jan Suraaj party are SP Rai, the candidate for the Darbhanga Teachers’ constituency, Ravindra Yadav for the Darbhanga Graduates’ constituency, Afaq Ahmed for the Saran Teachers’ constituency, Divya Jyoti for the Patna Teachers’ constituency and Rajnish Ranjan for the Kosi Graduates’ constituency.
Addressing the issue of employment, Prashant Kishor said that in constituencies where Jan Suraaj Party candidates are elected, the party would undertake initiatives aimed at providing employment opportunities to 10,000 educated youths.
The eight council seats going to the polls comprise four graduates’ constituencies and four teachers’ constituencies.
The terms of the incumbent members are scheduled to expire in November 2026.
Political activities intensified:
Candidate selection has also gathered momentum within other political parties and alliances.
In Patna Graduates’ constituency, reports have emerged that some political leaders are extending support to Anant Singh’s younger brother.
JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar has represented this constituency for three consecutive terms.
Meanwhile, differences over seat-sharing and candidate selections have reportedly surfaced within the Mahagathbandhan as RJD has already announced its six candidates, including the Darbhanga seat.
With the formal election notification still awaited, political parties are continuing discussions over candidates and constituency-wise strategies.
