Patna, March 29, 2024: Former deputy chief minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday dismissed questions regarding Congress leader Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who has been claiming a ticket from the Purnea Lok Sabha seat.
Tejashwi Yadav claimed his party has old relation with Congress:
Responding to reporters, Tejashwi said, “It is not our matter. I don’t know any individual person. We have an old alliance with the Congress party, and discussion on the seat-sharing formula was taking place for a long time. The number of seats for Congress was finalized in January this year. During that discussion, Congress never demanded the Purnea seat, so there is no question of giving it to them.”
Pappu Yadav, who merged his Jan Adhikar Party into Congress with the expectation of contesting from Purnea, was left disappointed after the seat went to RJD, which had fielded Bima Bharti. He has, however, continued campaigning in support of Congress and Rahul Gandhi.
Congress sources indicated that the party’s focus during negotiations was on Katihar, not Purnea. After prolonged talks with RJD, the seat went to Congress, with Tariq Anwar emerging as the likely candidate.
Meanwhile, discontent is visible within the Bihar Congress over Pappu Yadav’s entry. State President Akhilesh Singh has distanced himself from his events and avoided making statements on him.
BJP criticized Tejashwi Yadav:
The BJP seized the opportunity to target both parties. Spokesperson Arvind Kumar Singh said, “Congress is a party known for dual policies. It asked Pappu Yadav to merge his party, but gave him nothing. Tejashwi Yadav’s statement has made that clear. If Pappu Yadav has courage, let him contest independently. Tejashwi cannot allow any Yadav leader to rise in Bihar apart from his family.”
With the INDIA bloc finalizing its seats, Purnea is set for a high-stakes contest where Pappu Yadav now stands marginalized.
