Patna, September 28, 2024: Vijay Kumar Sinha, the Bihar Deputy Chief Minister has acknowledged the worsening flood situation in Bihar, especially in the northern region.

Vijay Kumar Sinha pointed out that the impact of the floods this year has been more severe, stating, “The anger of nature is higher in Bihar this year.”

Despite the challenges, Vijay Kumar Sinha assured that the state government is vigilant and prepared to address the crisis.

Vijay Kumar Sinha, who has visited flood-affected areas like Bhojpur and other districts, mentioned that water levels in the region have been fluctuating unpredictably, describing the behaviour as unusual this year.

Vijay Kumar Sinha referred to the situation as a “litmus test” for the government, emphasizing their readiness to assist those impacted by the disaster.

Vijay Kumar Sinha also highlighted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s commitment to the flood victims, stating, “Nitish Kumar has clearly said that the disaster victims have the first right on the government treasury.”

Meanwhile, the water resource department released 4,32,250 cusecs of water were released from the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage on Friday at 1 p.m. Additionally, 5,21,455 cusec of water was released from the Kosi Barrage in Virpur block as well. On Saturday, 4.49 lakh cusec water was released from Kos Barrage at 9 a.m. on Saturday, raising further concerns about the flood levels in the region. The administration has opened all 56 gates of Kosi Barrage.

Sanjeev Kumar Mall, Principal Secretary of the Water Resource Department, has instructed officials to closely monitor the flood situation and implement security measures to protect embankments and ensure timely rescue operations.

“All executive engineers, junior engineers and other officers have been asked to remain stationed at the embankments within their jurisdictions for the next 48 hours. Additionally, they have been asked to arrange fold control equipment such as sandbags to prevent soil erosion along riverbanks,” Mall said.

To ensure full preparedness, all leaves for the officers within the department have been cancelled and round-the-clock vigilance has been mandated to safeguard vulnerable areas. This proactive approach aims to minimize the impact of the anticipated floods, ensuring the safety of both the infrastructure and the local population.

Districts like West Champaran, East Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Gopalganj, Siwan, Bhagalpur and Banka of Bihar have experienced significant rainfall, with some areas recording as much as 205 mm of rain.

According to the Central Water Commission, the water levels of major rivers of Bihar are fluctuating, with several crossing the danger mark due to continuous rainfall.

Ganges River, at Digha Ghat in Patna district, was 86 cm below the danger mark till 6 a.m. today. But due to rain, there is a possibility of an increase in its water. It is above the danger level mark at Hathidah. The current water level at Hathidah is 11 cm above the danger level.

The water level of the Ganga River in Munger of Munger district was 63 cm below the danger mark at 6 am today. The water level of the Ganga river in Kahalgaon of Bhagalpur district was 54 cm above the danger mark till 6 am today. Due to rain, the water level of the river is predicted to increase.

The water level of the Gandak River in Dumria Ghat of Gopalganj district was 57 cm below the danger mark. Its water level is likely to increase by 38 cm due to the release of water from the Gandak barrage.

Kosi River is flowing 84 CM above the danger level mark in Kursela of Katihar district.

Bagmati River is flowing above the danger level at Sonakhan in Sitamarhi district by 08 cm. Burhi Gandak River is flowing 81 cm above the danger level at Khagaria.

Kamla Balan is flowing 15 CM above at Jay Nagar in Madhubani district.
