Patna October 21, 2024: Bihar has made a historic move by becoming the first state in India to appoint three transgender individuals as sub-inspectors in the state police force.
Nitish Kumar gave appointment letters to 1239 candidates including three transgender:
At a ceremony held in Bapu Auditorium, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar handed over appointment letters to 1239 newly recruited sub-inspectors, including Manvi Madhu Kashyap, the first transwoman sub-inspector and Rohit Jha and Bunty Kumar, both transmen.
This follows a 2021 Patna High Court historic decision, which mandated the inclusion of transgender individuals in police recruitment.
Although five seats were reserved for transgender candidates by the Bihar Police Subordinate Service Commission (BPSSC), only three were successfully selected.
The state government, through an affidavit, also committed to deploying one sub-inspector and four constables from the third gender category in each district.
Nitish Kumar urged officials to speed up the recruitment process:
During the event, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar emphasized the urgency of completing police recruitment before next year’s assembly elections.
He reiterated the goal of increasing female representation in the police force to 35%, with a plan to recruit a total of 229,000 personnel in the state police department.
Kumar’s push for rapid recruitment reflects the state’s intention to enhance law enforcement ahead of the assembly elections.
The Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Raj assured that the process would be completed quickly, with a commitment to maintaining honesty and integrity within the police force.
Nitish Kumar emphasized the urgency of reinstating approximately 1.25 lakh police personnel on various posts in the state. This comes after his recent instructions during a review meeting to expedite the recruitment process, and once again, he reiterated the need for swift action, aiming to complete the process before the upcoming assembly elections.
During the occasion, key figures like two Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, water resource minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Bihar DGP Alok Raj and other senior officials of the police force and home department were present.
