Patna, June 29, 2024: After five bridges collapsed across Bihar in the last 11 days, former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav launched a scathing attack on the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government, questioning its claims of good governance.
Tejashwi Yadav said the repeated bridge collapses have exposed the state government’s good governance model, and alleged that corruption and negligence were rampant in public infrastructure projects. In a post on social media platform X, Yadav wrote, “Thousands of crores of rupees submerged in water, and people staying in power are not saying it is corruption. For them, it is etiquette (Sistachar). Five bridges have collapsed since June 18. Shockingly, the leaders of NDA who claimed good governance are not opening their mouths.”
Tejashwi Yadav mentioned five bridge collapses in 11 days:
The most recent incident occurred on Friday evening when a girder of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Madhubani district.
The bridge was being built over the Bhutahi Balan River at Lalwarhi village under Madhepur block, and the girder installation had been completed just two days earlier.
This marks the fifth such incident since June 18.
A bridge worth Rs 12 crore over the Bakra River in Sikti block of Araria district collapsed on June 18.
Another bridge was built on the canal linking Daraunda and Maharajganj blocks in Siwan district on June 22.
A 70-meter-long bridge fell in the Ghodasahan block in East Champaran on June 23.
On June 27, a bridge collapsed in Kishanganj district.
The latest mishap occurred in Madhubani, when the girder of the Bhutahi Balan bridge came crashing down.
Political reaction and public outcry:
The successive collapses have triggered widespread criticism of the state’s infrastructure quality and monitoring mechanisms.
Opposition party leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, have accused the government of corruption, poor oversight, and substandard construction practices.
Meanwhile, officials from the concerned departments have stated that technical teams have been deployed to inspect the damaged bridges and determine the causes of failure.
The incidents have also sparked public outrage, with questions being raised about safety standards and accountability in Bihar’s ongoing infrastructure projects.
