Background: the daily tree-planting resolves:
While environmental pledges are often made, sustained commitment is rare. Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s daily tree-planting vow has emerged as a notable example of consistency in public life.
During his tenure as Chief Minister, he resolved to move beyond speeches and embed environmental action into daily practice.
The initiative has inspired citizens to view tree-planting as a natural part of daily life. Its roots can be traced to the Narmada Seva Yatra in 2017, during which over 60 million saplings were planted across Madhya Pradesh, turning river conservation, afforestation, and climate awareness into a mass movement.
Subsequently, the Ankur Abhiyan was launched, encouraging citizens to plant saplings, upload photos on a dedicated portal, and pledge to nurture them.
Nearly 10 million saplings were planted under the campaign, with participation from diverse sections of society.
Over time, the initiative expanded beyond Madhya Pradesh to gain national and international participation.
By linking tree-planting with personal milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries, and memorial days, Chouhan fostered a unique tradition that transformed an individual pledge into a broad-based public movement for environmental stewardship.
